The plots have been laid out and will be randomly assigned save for an end spot for the Moms group who are thinking it may be good to have a grassy spot for the kids to roll on.
Lesley and David went all the way up to Chester NY to get green coated fencing. I think we are a kick-off next weekend-
PS I started this BLOG because I could not figure out how to add a facebook account.
Let the planting begin.
First Day... Lessons Learned
ReplyDeleteI worked from home today and decided to spend an hour on lunch break getting my plot ready. At 11:30, I packed the car with 5 gallon buckets and my tools and headed to the Glen Rock Recycle center for a load of compost and wood chips... Lesson #1: The facility is CLOSED on Wednesdays... which made me realize every other normal person in Glen Rock is working right now and I am thinking about compost!
Well, I didn't want to waste the effort, so I went down to the garden anyway and dug a little and moved some soil around in my plot. It was a little humid out, and I quickly worked up a thirst. Lesson #2: Bring Water... I spent all of 15 minutes today Gardening....
I did note that the soil was very loose. It was easy to work, and it wasn't as sandy as I was expecting. Though I am sure some added organic compost couldn't hurt, which I intend to work on this weekend.
I realized how important the 2' Paths will be. I read some where that stepping in your garden can compact the soil too much, and effect root growth. It will be important to work with tools with long handles to minimize stepping in your plot.
A few people passed by and wondered what I was doing with tools down there. The mail man saw me, and probably doesn't know what we are doing yet... as our garden grows, I think the community will welcome what we are doing and show more interest everyday.
Good luck to everyone on their first day at the Garden. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did... and spend a little more then 15 minutes!
